After the original Blue Protocol shut down its PC version in early 2025 due to Bandai Namco’s struggles with retention and monetization, Tencent has stepped in to relaunch the franchise as Blue Protocol: Star Resonance: a reworked mobile-first adaptation with a PC client. The game is now confirmed for a 2025 release in English-speaking regions on Steam and the Epic Games Store, featuring cross-play between mobile and PC.
A deal for the mobile version of the game was likely inked with Tencent well before the PC client shut down and it looks like the demise of the PC version isn’t stopping Tencent from launching their version.
While keeping the core anime MMORPG identity intact, Tencent’s version introduces key changes:
- Mobile-PC Cross-Platform Play: Seamless progression across devices.
- Expanded Customization: Deeper character personalization than the original.
- Dynamic Combat: Class builds, skill combos, and gear synergies designed for iterative updates.
- Social Systems: Guilds, trading, and live events to bolster multiplayer engagement.
Bandai Namco’s Blue Protocol garnered praise for its visuals and combat but faltered due to sparse endgame content and unpopular monetization. Star Resonance aims to address those flaws, but time will tell if they can succeed.
No exact launch date has been set, but the 2025 window suggests a potential beta phase later this year. For fans of the original, Star Resonance offers a second chance, albeit under Tencent’s direction, to experience Blue Protocol’s vibrant world.
