Chrono Odyssey Playtest Hits 65,000 Concurrent Players, But Leaves Many Disappointed

Published:

Chrono Odyssey launched their closed beta test on Steam yesterday and reached 65,000 concurrent players, which shows enormous market demand for a new MMORPG. While it’s not an open beta and will have a wipe, anyone can register and play until the test ends tomorrow, June 22.

While this is only a closed beta, I was unimpressed. And I wasn’t the only one. Everything from the game’s animations to awful lighting left a lot to be desired. The entire color pallete felt washed out during most weather effects. The world only looked good at nighttime. While everything felt a bit jank from movement to combat, I did enjoy the first boss fight, the Thousandfold Piercer, which took me 6 tries to beat. Rarely do MMORPGs offer players any kind of challenge in the early game and I appreciated that in Chrono Odyssey.

The most glaring issue during the closed beta is the game’s poor lighting implementation on Unreal Engine 5. Things can look jarring while running around or moving the camera as seen below:

Closed beta runs until June 22. If you’re curious, give the game a try.
