Dune: Awakening Opens Head Start Access for Deluxe and Ultimate Edition Owners

Published:

Dune: Awakening, the open world multiplayer survival game based on Frank Herbert’s iconic science fiction universe, is now live for those who picked up the Deluxe or Ultimate Edition ahead of its official launch. Players who have pre-purchased these editions can begin exploring the harsh deserts of Arrakis before the game’s full release on June 10, with pre-loading available now via Steam.

Developed by Funcom, Dune: Awakening takes a unique approach to the source material, setting its story in an alternate timeline where Paul Atreides never existed. This fresh narrative direction gives longtime fans and newcomers a chance to experience the politics, survival challenges, and mysteries of Arrakis from a new perspective. The game was featured at this year’s Summer Game Fest, where its launch trailer debuted, offering a glimpse at its large-scale multiplayer world and survival mechanics inspired by the novels and films.

  • Head Start access is now open for Deluxe and Ultimate Edition owners, with the standard release following on June 10
  • Players can pre-load the game on Steam regardless of edition
  • The official soundtrack by Knut Avenstroup Haugen is now available on major streaming services, including bonus tracks from the game’s trailers
  • The game features a parallel Dune timeline, exploring new narrative possibilities
  • No in-game store or subscription; future updates will come as DLC and free content

Funcom has emphasized their aim to authentically recreate the atmosphere of Dune, both visually and in terms of gameplay systems. The game drops hundreds of players onto Arrakis, forcing them to navigate deadly sandstorms, massive sandworms, and the ever-present struggle for spice—the universe’s most valuable resource. Players will align with major factions like Atreides or Harkonnen and can influence the wider world through strategic choices and alliances.

Dune: Awakening joins a growing trend of large-scale survival games but stands out with its deep connection to a storied science fiction franchise as well as MMO elements. With a new take on Dune lore and a focus on both survival and political intrigue, it will be interesting to see how the community shapes the world of Arrakis over time.
