MMO and Shooter Veterans Launch Distinct Possibility Studios with $30.5M Funding Round

Published:

Distinct Possibility Studios, a new game development studio founded by industry veterans, has secured over $30.5 million in funding. The investment round was led by Bitkraft Ventures and Brevan Howard Digital, with participation from several other firms, to support the studio’s first project: REAPER ACTUAL, an open-world persistent shooter.

The founders of Distinct Possibility Studios include names like John Smedley, Matt Higby, Trammel Isaac, Michael Hunley, and Tammy McDonald, all of whom have played key roles in shaping games such as EverQuest, PlanetSide, and H1Z1. Their new venture aims to blend MMO-style persistent worlds with first-person shooter gameplay, a combination that has seen growing interest in recent years as studios look to create more dynamic and interconnected game experiences.

REAPER ACTUAL is being developed in partnership with Big Moxi Games, a studio based in Latin America. The game has been in development for two years, with the team focusing on building a world where in-game battles have lasting impacts. This approach follows a trend in multiplayer shooters and MMOs where player-driven events can alter the game’s environment or narrative.

  • Over $30.5 million raised in initial funding, led by Bitkraft Ventures and Brevan Howard Digital
  • Studio founded by veterans from major MMO and shooter franchises
  • First project, REAPER ACTUAL, aims to merge persistent MMO elements with first-person shooter gameplay
  • Developed in collaboration with Big Moxi Games
  • Planned release on Steam, Epic Games Store, and a dedicated website
  • An optional Web3 marketplace will allow players to buy, sell, and trade in-game items using the Etherlink blockchain

REAPER ACTUAL is set to launch on PC on both Steam and Epic Games. While I’m always skeptical of games with blockchain elements, the studio behind this one looks well funded and has some industry veterans.
