Blizzard has rolled out Season 16 of Overwatch 2, introducing a fresh game mode, a deadly new hero, and strategic changes to competitive play. The update, available now across all platforms, delivers on several long-teased features alongside flashy cosmetic rewards.
While Marvel Rivals has been all the rage lately, Overwatch continues to introduce updates regularly. Overwatch’s playerbase on Steam has jumped from ~30,000 to 60,000 on the back of the Season 16 update. Most Overwatch players do not play on Steam, so this figure isn’t representative of the game’s playerbase. Still, it shows that a new season can reinvigorate the playerbase.
Stadium Mode Debuts
A brand-new team-based objective mode arrives with unique mechanics:
- Stadium Initiation Event: Complete challenges to earn exclusive character skins
- Dynamic Playstyle: Emphasizes fast-paced, map-control gameplay (details remain scarce, but Blizzard promises it’s a “fresh take” on Overwatch’s formula)
New Hero: Freja (DPS)
The roster expands with a nimble, disruption-focused archer:
- Primary Fire: Rapid-fire crossbow bolts
- Abilities:
- Gust Shot: Launches enemies upward for easy pickings
- Tactical Dash: Quick repositioning tool
- Playstyle: A hybrid of Hanzo’s precision and Tracer’s mobility, ideal for isolating targets
Competitive Hero Bans
Ranked play gets a meta-shaking twist:
- Pre-Match Voting: Each team submits two hero bans (four total per match)
- Simultaneous Selection: Bans are locked in blindly, adding strategic depth
- Goal: Encourage adaptability and reduce reliance on overpowered picks
