PlanetSide 2 Addresses Server Merge Fallout and Teases Infiltrator Rework

Published:

PlanetSide 2’s North American server merge earlier this year didn’t go as smoothly as developer Toadman Interactive/Daybreak (often referred to as ToadBreak) had hoped. The decision to consolidate the more stable Emerald server into the historically lag-prone Connery server sparked significant backlash, with some players even offering to fund a reversal of the change. While that didn’t happen, the studio has since acknowledged the issues and outlined ongoing efforts to improve the game’s infrastructure and gameplay experience.

In a recent update, ToadBreak admitted that the West Coast data center choice, while strategic for load balancing, came with drawbacks for some players. The studio emphasized that the merge was a necessary step to lay the groundwork for larger battles and more focused content. Since the merge, backend improvements have reportedly led to better connection stability, though the team remains cautious about committing to further infrastructure upgrades, stating they’ll depend on community feedback and evolving needs.

Looking ahead, the developer teased several updates planned for the coming months:

  • New directives set to launch this month, adding fresh objectives for players.
  • A rework of the Infiltrator class, introducing new tools and abilities for battlefield manipulation while maintaining stealth.
  • Sniping adjustments and a new recon drone gadget, with these changes expected to enter public testing this summer.

Despite these announcements, the community response has been mixed. Many players expressed frustration over the Infiltrator class potentially receiving buffs instead of nerfs, while others remain skeptical about the claimed server improvements. In the meantime, the latest patch introduced a double XP event, four long-term directives, and several bug fixes.

While I haven’t played PlanetSide 2 in ages myself, it’s the only real MMOFPS game out there, so I’m hoping it survives.
