Popular Japanese Gacha Game Umamusume: Pretty Derby Launches in English (Mobile / Steam)

Published:

Umamusume: Pretty Derby, one of the most popular and successful mobile games in Japan, launched today in English on both mobile and Steam. The game is developed and published by Cygames, the same studio behind Shadowverse. It originally launched back in 2021 and made its way to Western audiences today.

The game’s Steam launch is off to a strong start, hitting 22,700+ concurrent players shortly after launch. Given the game’s enormous success in Japan, these numbers aren’t too surprising.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby is a gacha-style sports training simulation mobile game where players train and nurture “horse girls” (anthropomorphized racehorses) inspired by real-world Thoroughbreds, guiding them through rigorous training regimes to compete in exciting 3D races. The word Umamusume translates roughly into horse girls.

While the game is a few years late to the West, I’ll be giving it a try out of curiosity given its success in Japan.
