Okay, so, before we get started, when we said “water world” in the title, we just meant the game takes place in an apocalyptic world where everything is water – not the 1990s Kevin Costner movie with that exact premise. (Which, while not being the best movie, was still moderately entertaining and kind of novel for the sheer amount of people it took to build those sets. I’m pretty sure the list of caterers in the credits was massive as well.)
Age of Water, a project from Gaijin Entertainment and Three Whales Studio, is set in a “post-apocalyptic aquatic world” where players take on the role of a motorboat captain, exploring the flooded Earth, looking for artifacts from the bottom of the sea, fighting pirates, engaging in trade, and just doing the kind of stuff you’d probably expect from someone living the entirety of his life on a boat adrift at sea. Players get to experience this through story missions, PvP, and taking on challenges with friends.
As of today, the game is in Early Access – which also happens to be the second stage of Closed Beta testing. What this means is that players can now buy one of several access packs and gain access to the closed beta test. Those who don’t want to pony up the cash for the game just yet can still try their luck and sign up for the test via the game’s site.
