Today, a new studio founded by former leaders from Funcom, Lockwood, and Bohemia was announced. Having already secured $5M in funding for the Oslo-based studio, the team seeks to “evolve” the hardcore survival genre. The plans are to use their extensive experience to “create the most novel and engaging multiplayer experiences on the market”.
In a press release, Red Rover Interactive CEO Fred Richardson discussed the logic behind their current plans, stating that they “believe multiplayer interactions are fundamentally more powerful than PVE ones.” He goes on to state that most online games don’t play into this enough and instead are built as “single-player experiences that support many players”. They plan to build on this, with a focus on the survival genre.
As noted, Red Rover is the latest project by a group of industry veterans. These include individuals previously associated with Funcom, Ubisoft Reflections, Lockwood Publishing, Bohemia Interactive, and Crytek. Company-wise, their plan is to focus on mid-sized, close-knit teams. The company currently boasts 17 members – most of which have worked together on previous projects.
